(i) (1) Only one crop is grown from May to November. Farmers are dependent on the monsoon season. Therefore their harvests are limited because the monsoon season is from June to July. Crops would be in abundance then. (2)Methods used are far too traditional. Cultivation processes like transplanting, weeding and harvesting are done manually and are labour-intensive. This slows down the efficiency. (3) No chemical fertilisers and herbicides, instead, manure is used. Weeds are pulled out manually and they reduce chances of crops survival because crops do not get sufficient nutrients and face competition from weeds.

(ii) (1) New approaches- applications of modern technology to increase the amount of crops. (2) Green revolution- better seeds, pesticides, fertilisers, irrigation to ensure stable supply of water- this solves the problem of food supply, worries about food security and food scarcity. (3) Use fast maturing rice varieties which take a shorter time to grow, thus the number of croppings that can be grown in a year will increase, resulting in an improvement in yield. (4) Use chemical fertilisers as they help to improve rice yield, HYV requires large amounts of nutrients. Herbicides and pesticides can be used to kill weeds and reduce the chances of pest attacks and crop failures. (5) Use modern irrigation techniques to ensure a regular supply of water all year round so that more croppings can be cultivated in a year, and the farmer need not depend on monsoon rain for water. Irrigation also increases the amount of arable land so that farmers can farm on a larger plot of land. (6) They can also replace some of the labour intensive processes by using machinery for ploughing and/or harvesting. This speeds up the whole cultivation process hence more crops can be grown in a year.
